CHAPTER TWELVE

I’d already finished my first cup of tea. I’d already dressed in something that I could stretch in down at the beach. I’d already sorted through my papers and the work I had to do for the day. I’d even thumbed through the previous notes of the journal and re-read them. What I was really waiting for, was the sounds from Nikki’s cabin that told me she was awake. And when I finally heard them, just a few minutes after 5 am, I’d begun to pace my tiny cabin like a caged cat.

When, just after 5:32, I heard the scraping wood of Nikki’s screen door, I looked through the mesh of mine and was met with her smile. Seeing her gave me a little skipping sensation in my chest and lower in my belly. She was wearing her black hoodie, long lycra pants and her red canvas high-tops. Her black bag was slung over her shoulder.

She gave me a little wave before she locked the door behind her. She descended and crossed the path quickly then glanced at the face of the thick black watch that was strapped to the inside of her wrist. She dropped her bag on the bottom step and climbed my stairs two at a time.

Her hands wrapped around my waist and pulled me close. “Good morning,” she said. “Were you waiting to give me a good luck kiss?”

I suppose I could have called it that but I answered instead with my lips. That’s what I’d been so anxious about, I knew it right away. As soon as I felt Nikki’s mouth, a calmness spread over me. I knew I’d probably be able to carry on with my day with less distraction.

She tasted of mint toothpaste and smelled like tropical flowers. Her hair was damp and bundled behind her head. I wished we were lying on our nest of pillows and had more time to languish but soon she checked her watch again and sighed. “How long to get to the dock if I run?”

“Three minutes,” I said.

Nikki smiled a little as she did the calculation. “That leaves us four minutes.”

She pressed me against the wood house beneath the early morning shadows and for five-and-a-half minutes we completely lost track of time.

“I’ll be thinking about you all day,” she whispered and gave me one final kiss. “I wish I didn’t have to go.” She shook her head, “I’ve never wished I didn’t have to go.” She gave my hand a final squeeze and bounded down the steps. She slung her bag over her shoulder and took off at a sprint.

I watched her run for as long as I could while I savored the lingering flavors of her mouth. When I went back inside, I left my second cup of tea for later as I wanted to taste her for as long as I possibly could.

The email from the lab came through at 10:17 am. There were three new scans from Marie’s journal and all seemed to be legible enough to read.
